How to Get Your
Victoria Road Test
Sooner

The McKenzie Avenue wait feels impossible. Here is the system our students use to find cancellations and move their test date up sometimes by weeks.

Class 5 and Class 7 McKenzie Avenue Victoria BC

The Wait Is Real.
But It Does Not Have to Be Yours.

We hear it constantly. A student calls us excited about starting driving lessons in Victoria BC, ready to book their road test, and then finds out the next available slot at McKenzie Avenue is three or four months away. That feeling is awful especially when you have been practicing hard and you know you are ready.

Here is what we tell every single one of our students: the wait on the ICBC booking page is not fixed. People cancel. People reschedule. Slots open up every single day. We have had students find appointments 6 weeks earlier than what was showing just by checking at the right moment.

The difference between students who find those slots and students who do not is not luck. It is a simple habit.

Cancellations happen daily

Life changes. Students reschedule, get sick, or change plans. Those slots go back into the system and are available to whoever checks first.

Most students check too rarely

Checking once a week means you are almost always too late. The early slots are gone within hours sometimes within minutes of being released.

ICBC encourages this

Checking the ICBC booking portal regularly is something ICBC themselves recommend. Appointments open up daily as people cancel and reschedule. This is simply about being ready when they do.

McKenzie Avenue Is the Only Spot

Before anything else know where you are going. For Class 5 and Class 7 road tests in Victoria, McKenzie Avenue is the one location. The ICBC Driver Licensing office at 1150 McKenzie Avenue is where your test starts and ends.

This matters for your practice too. The neighbourhoods around McKenzie include Saanich streets like Shelbourne Street, Cedar Hill Road and Quadra Street. Practicing in this area generally builds real confidence. Know the school zones. Know the intersections. Familiarity with the area around the office is always a good idea.

McKenzie also handles knowledge tests and motorcycle skills tests. It is the main driver licensing hub for Victoria.

The 60-Second Check That Changes Everything

Most students check the ICBC booking site once a week, maybe less. By the time they look, the cancellation slot that opened Monday morning has already been taken by someone who checked at 7am.

The fix is not complicated. You just need to look more often and your phone can remind you automatically. Set it up once and it runs on its own.

Try the Standby Line in Person

If you have a flexible morning and want to be more aggressive about getting your test date moved up, there is another option. McKenzie Avenue offers standby road tests for students who show up in person and wait.

We have seen students standing outside McKenzie Avenue early in the morning. It is first come first served. If someone no shows or cancels on the day, that slot can become available to whoever is waiting.

1
Arrive approximately 45 minutes before the office opens

Getting there early puts you at the front of the line. The earlier you arrive the better your chances of being first when a slot opens.

2
Let the front desk know you are there for standby

Check in with ICBC staff when the office opens and let them know you are available for a standby test that day.

3
Be ready to go immediately

If a slot opens up you need to be ready right away. Make sure your vehicle is roadworthy, insured and you have all your documents with you.

Always confirm with ICBC before you go

Standby availability and office hours can change. Contact ICBC directly to confirm the standby process at McKenzie Avenue before making the trip.

Finding the Slot Is Only Half of It

Here is the part most students miss. You find an earlier slot great. But now you have two weeks instead of three months to be ready. That changes things.

The McKenzie examiners are experienced. They run back-to-back tests all day. They are not looking to fail you, but they notice the details. Smooth stops. Proper mirror checks. Clean shoulder checks before lane changes. Correct speed in school zones near the office.

Do not use your waiting time just driving around. Use it to practice the specific skills that examiners look for. At Sky Driving School we run mock road tests that build the confidence and precision you need on test day. We point out exactly what will cost you points and what will make you look confident behind the wheel.

One lesson close to your test date is often the difference between passing and coming back for another attempt.
