Pre-Trip Vehicle Check for Everyday Driving and Road Tests in BC
A pre-trip inspection is a habit every driver in BC should build before getting behind the wheel. It is not just for road test day. Checking your vehicle takes less than two minutes and helps you catch problems before they become a safety issue on the road. If you are heading to your Class 5 or Class 7 road test, this check also protects you from having your appointment cancelled because of a vehicle defect that could have been fixed the night before.

Daily Pre-Trip Check
These five checks take less than two minutes and should become part of your routine every time you get into a vehicle. According to ICBC Tuning Up for Drivers, building this habit early makes you a safer and more aware driver in all conditions.
- Walk around the vehicle. Do a full circle check before getting in. Look for flat tires, fluid patches under the car, damage, or anything blocking the front or rear of the vehicle.
- Windows, mirrors and lights. Windows should be clean and unobstructed. Mirrors free of dirt or cracks. Confirm headlights, taillights and brake lights are working before you pull out.
- Tires. Check that tires are properly inflated with good tread. Look for cuts, bulges or visible damage on the sidewall. A tire problem is one of the most common reasons a road test appointment gets cancelled.
- Ground under the vehicle. Fresh oil or fluid patches underneath the car indicate a mechanical problem. Have it checked before driving.
- Interior adjustments. Adjust your seat so both feet reach the pedals with a slight bend in the knee. Fasten your seatbelt. Set the head restraint and all three mirrors before starting the engine.
Do not adjust your mirrors after the engine is running. Set everything before you start the car. On a road test this is a marked error on your result sheet.
Periodic Vehicle Check
In addition to your daily walk-around, do a more thorough check of your vehicle regularly. For new drivers, weekly is a good habit. It helps you learn what normal looks, sounds and feels like on your car so you notice problems early.
Lights and Controls
- All lights including headlights, taillights, brake lights, hazard lights and signal lights
- Signals, wipers and horn
- Heating and defrost systems
- Doors and windows open and close properly from both inside and outside
- Muffler and exhaust. Listen for unusual noises or smells while driving
Under the Hood
- Engine oil level using the dipstick when the engine is cold
- Coolant and brake fluid levels
- Belts and hoses. Look for cracks or fraying
- Windshield washer fluid
Brakes
Move the vehicle forward slightly and apply steady pressure to the brake pedal. The car should stop smoothly with no pulling to one side. Confirm the parking brake holds the vehicle on a slight incline.
↑ Back to contentsBefore Your Road Test
If you are heading to your Class 5 or Class 7 road test in BC, do a full vehicle check the evening before your appointment. That gives you time to fix any problem before it costs you your road test fee and your spot. Do not leave this until the morning of your test.
The examiner will inspect your vehicle before the test begins. If they find a safety defect, your appointment will be cancelled and you will need to reschedule. The most common issues students run into are burnt out lights, low tire pressure, a dashboard warning light they have been ignoring, and a gas tank that is too low to complete the test.
Turn on every light and confirm each one works. Open the passenger door from the inside to confirm it functions. Check your insurance and registration are in the glove box. Fill the gas tank to at least half. Fix anything that is not right before your appointment.
If you are using the Sky Driving School vehicle for your road test, our instructors complete all pre-trip checks before every booking. See our road test packages for details.
If you are preparing for a Class 4 Restricted road test, the pre-trip inspection is more detailed and follows a different sequence. Practice it using our interactive Class 4 pre-trip inspection tool.
10 Reasons ICBC Will Reject Your Vehicle
There are ten specific reasons an ICBC examiner will cancel your road test appointment before it starts. Any one of these means your appointment is cancelled and you will need to reschedule.
We have a dedicated page that covers all ten in detail: ICBC Road Test Vehicle Checklist. Go through every item the day before your road test so there are no surprises in the parking lot.
- Cracked or illegally tinted windshield or windows that obstruct the driver's view
- Dashboard warning lights that affect safe operation of the vehicle such as airbag warnings
- Seatbelts not working or frayed
- Brake lights, signal lights or headlights not working, or with badly cracked or missing lenses
- Interior of the vehicle is not clean or there are items inside that may affect health or safety
- Unsafe or illegal vehicle modifications
- Horn not working
- Unsafe tires
- Doors or windows not operating properly, for example doors that do not open from the inside
- Gas tank or electric charge too low to complete the road test

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to do a pre-trip inspection for the ICBC road test in BC?
Yes. The examiner observes how you approach and check the vehicle before the test begins. Skipping or rushing the inspection will be noted on your result sheet. Practicing this routine before every lesson makes it automatic on road test day.
What happens if my car has a warning light on at the road test?
If a dashboard warning light that affects safe operation is on when the examiner checks your vehicle, your appointment will be cancelled. You will need to have the issue repaired and reschedule. Have any warning lights diagnosed well before your test date.
When should I adjust my mirrors before the road test?
Before starting the engine. Adjust your seat, fasten your seatbelt, set your head restraint and adjust all three mirrors before the engine is running. Adjusting mirrors after starting the car is a marked error on the result sheet.
Is the pre-trip inspection different for the Class 4 road test?
Yes. The Class 4 Restricted pre-trip inspection is more detailed than the Class 5 or Class 7 version. It includes a full circle check, a check inspection of all lights and signals, and specific in-cab checks. Use our Class 4 pre-trip inspection tool to practice the full sequence.
How often should I do a full vehicle check as a new driver?
The daily walk-around should happen every single time you get in the car. The more thorough periodic check covering fluids, belts, hoses and brakes should be done weekly for new drivers. As you become more familiar with your vehicle you will naturally notice when something seems off between checks.
