One Turn Is Not the Same in Every Car

The Sky Driving School steering wheel calculator shows how far to turn the steering wheel for the first steering movement in our parallel parking method, based on your vehicle.

About the calculator: In Step 2 of our parallel parking method, you turn the steering wheel about 1 full turn right in our Toyota Prius Prime. The calculator shows the matching amount for other vehicles, starting from a centred wheel. It covers many popular models from Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru, Tesla and Volkswagen. Results for other vehicles are estimates based on published steering specifications, and vehicles still being checked show Not available yet.

Students often practise parallel parking in our Sky Driving School Ltd. training vehicle, then practise again at home in a family car. The reference points stay the same, but the car does not. This calculator exists so the steering movement you learned during your driving lessons in Victoria BC carries over to the vehicle you actually drive.

The Reason

Why Steering Differs by Car

The same turn of the steering wheel can make one car curve tighter than another, because vehicles are built with different steering systems.

  • Steering ratio is how far the steering wheel turns for each degree the front wheels turn. A quicker ratio turns the wheels further with less steering.
  • Wheelbase is the distance between the front and rear axles. A longer car generally needs more steering to follow the same curve.
  • Some vehicles also change ratio by trim or wheel size, which is why the calculator may ask for your trim.

The calculator compares your vehicle against our 2020 Toyota Prius Prime, where the 1 full turn in our method was measured, and shows the amount that produces a similar curve.

Using the Tool

How to Read Your Result

Your result is shown in simple fractions of a turn, measured to the right from a centred steering wheel.

  • Start with the steering wheel and front wheels straight. Every result is measured from that centre position, not from full lock.
  • "About 1 turn" means one complete rotation of the steering wheel. "About ⅞ turn" is slightly less, and "About 1⅛ turns" is slightly more.
  • Press Play to watch the steering wheel turn the amount shown. The arrow traces the movement, and a gold inner line appears if it goes past one full turn.
  • The front tire animation is a visual guide only. It shows direction, not an exact tire angle.
Instructor Tip

The steering amount only works together with the stopping points. Stop in the right place first, then turn. The parallel parking guide explains each stopping point.

Common Concern

What If Your Car Is Not Available Yet

If your vehicle shows Not available yet, we have not finished verifying its steering data, so we do not show a number.

A steering amount that is wrong for your car would teach the wrong movement, so we only publish a result once it has been checked. Until your vehicle is added, you can still practise safely.

  • Practise in a quiet parking lot with your supervising driver, starting from a centred wheel.
  • Focus on the stopping points and your 360 degree vision check. They are the same in every car.
  • Ask your Sky instructor to check the steering amount with you during a lesson.

Common Concern

What If the Result Feels Different

Small differences are normal. Treat the result as a starting reference and make small adjustments as you practise.

  • Tire size, trim level and tire pressure can all change how a car responds.
  • If you finish too far from the curb, you may need slightly more steering. If you get too close, you may need slightly less.
  • Adjust in small amounts, and keep your observations and speed control the same.
Important

The calculator cannot see the space, traffic or people around you. Keep checking your surroundings and stop whenever it is not clear and safe to continue.

How to Practise the Turn Safely

Practise the steering movement in a quiet space with a supervising driver before trying it on a street.

Stop the vehicle, centre the steering wheel, and try the amount the calculator shows while stationary so you can feel how far it is. Then practise the full sequence slowly, with the 360 degree vision check before every reverse.

Steering Wheel Calculator FAQs

Yes. The Sky Driving School steering wheel calculator is free and runs in your web browser. There is nothing to download or install.

The calculator covers many popular models from Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru, Tesla and Volkswagen. The Toyota Prius Prime is the vehicle our method was measured in, and other results are estimates based on published steering specifications. Vehicles still being checked show Not available yet.

We only publish a result once the steering data for that vehicle is verified. Showing no result is better than showing a number that could be wrong for your car.

Vehicles have different steering ratios and wheelbases. The same turn of the steering wheel can produce a tighter or wider curve depending on the car.

No. It gives you a starting reference for one steering movement. Supervised practice in a vehicle is still needed to develop vehicle control and judgement.

Our How to Parallel Park for the ICBC Road Test guide covers the complete method. The simulator lets you practise the full sequence.
